Fontana was a largely a rural city in San Bernardino County until World War II, when a large steel mill was built by Henry J. Kaiser. With a population over 214,000, it is now California’s 19th largest city. To meet the medical needs of the steel plant’s workers, Mr. Kaiser built the Fontana Kaiser Permanente medical facility, which is now the largest managed care organization in the U.S. Fontana hosts the Fontana Days Half Marathon, the fastest half-marathon course in the world.
